Shift Northwest!

That’s right—want to help with the economic recovery?  Shift your spending!

Shift Northwest is our way of creating a culture of support for local independent businesses.  So keep your eyes peeled for the Shift Northwest logo around town.  We'll be out at events with all kinds of great goodies from your local independent business network.

For every dollar spent at locally owned book stores, 44% of it stays in our local economy.  Spend that same dollar at a retailer based outside the Inland Northwest, and only 14% of it stays here.

Keeping dollars locally is good for jobs too.  Kent County MI (population 602,000, pretty close to our 471,000 in Spokane County and 108,000 in Kootenai) performed a study in 2008 that found if all consumers and businesses shifted just 10% of their spending back to locally owned companies, the area would see 1,600 new jobs, $50 million in new wages, and $140 Million in economic growth.  That’s without spending more, growing, or bringing in new businesses, just shifting spending!

So think local first! Give the Inland Northwest a kickstart this summer by choosing local!

We challenge you to take it to the next level, challenge yourself to shift 10% of your spending back to locally owned businesses.
